Origin and legends related to the Vrat Katha
The origins of Kamada Ekadashi are rooted in ancient Hindu scriptures, primarily the BhavishyaPurana, According to the legend, there was a city named Bhagipur, which was ruled by a king named Pundarika. King Pundarika was blessed with many opulences. Many Apsaras, Gandharvas, Kinnars etc. lived in his kingdom.
The Vrat Katha (story associated with the Ekadashi fast) explains the tale of a celestial couple, a Gandharva named Lalit and his nymph wife Lalita. Lalit and Lalita were proficient in singing. There was so much love between them that they used to get distressed at the mere thought of separation.
They faced King Pundrik’s wrath due to Lalit’s inadvertent disrespect and negligence while singing.
Once Lalit was singing in the court ofKing Pundarikaand at that time his beloved Lalita was not present there, and he suddenly remembered Lalita, due to which he started doing mistakes in singing. Nagraj Karkotaka complained about Lalit to King Pundarika. On this, the king got very angry and in anger he cursed Lalit – “to become a cannibalistic demon and suffer the consequences of his deeds.”
After becoming a demon in this way,Lalitstarted suffering many sorrows. Seeing monstrous appearance of her beloved husband, Lalita became distressed with immense sorrow. She started thinking about the means to get his husband from this hell-like suffering?
Once they went to the Ashram of Shringi Muni at Vindhyachal mountain. There she bowed down to the sage and humbly sought solution for his husband to get rid of the demon form.”
Hearing the entire story, Sage Shringiasked her to observe fast of Kamada Ekadashi
Which falls on the Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month .
He told that , by observing its fast, all the desires of the living being are soon fulfilled. He asked to give the virtue of her fast to her husband, by which he will easily be freed from the demonic form and the king’s curse.
As per the advice of the sage, Lalita fasted with devotion and on the day of Dwadashi, she gave the result of her fast to her husband.
As soon as she gave the results of Ekadashi, her husband was freed from the demon form and attained his divine form.
Pleased with her piety, Lord Hari absolved Lalit of the curse, restoring their celestial bliss.
Due to the powerful influence of Kamada Ekadashi, he became as beautiful as before and after death, both of them went to Vishnu Loka sitting on PushpakaVimana.
By observing this fast, all sins are destroyed and by its virtue man becomes free from the sins of Brahmahatya etc. and from the worldly life of demons etc. There is no other fast in the world better than this. Even by listening and reading its significant story and greatness one gets infinite results.
